Design and Build with Cane

4th March – 31st March 2018

Design and Build with Canes, a 4 week building workshop in Colleserola Natural Park , Spain. During this workshop we built an external covered space of 30mq to be used for cultural meetings and for theoretic classes during CanyaViva's courses cane construction.

Based on the unique characteristics of curvature, flexibility and resistance, of bamboo and cane, we aspire to define a specific architecture for these materials, which optimizes these qualities, thanks to the shape of the structure and the method of construction. Composing several curved elements connected in different points, a system has been created in which the forces are evenly distributed throughout the structure, optimizing the resistance of the construction in the face of both internal and external forces.

We combine bamboo and cane structures with other organic materials, such as natural rope, clay and straw, lime and hemp fiber. In addition to reducing the carbon footprint of the building, these materials are resistant, breathable, highly insulating, and have a large thermal mass to provide heat in winter and freshness in summer.

 The Design

By combining several structural arches structures of different sizes and designs can be created. For this, the arches can be connected to each other or to other curved connection elements.

To achieve a certain desired shape, the structure is designed using 3D design software and the measurements of the structural arches necessary to build it are determined, as well as the sizes of the canes that will form the arches.

“The workshop is a very suitable method to understand certain construction methods and gives you the opportunity to have a human and personal experience in an international context, with people who pursue similar objectives.”

News from the workshop

CanyaViva is an association that researches, develops and promotes bio construction projects that contribute to a lasting change in human activities.

We act within a holistic vision, integrating different disciplines in a single gesture, developing our own building model that respects nature as a fundamental principle, encouraging the use of natural, abundant and renewable materials, creating innovative and harmonious spaces.

Since 2008 we have been developing a project based on the study and application of the common reed and bamboo in making resistant arches to create increasingly complex structures. We are currently in Catalunya near Barcelona where our objective is to create a research, development and training center. We understand each of our projects as a social meeting place, a labor camp, learning experience, research, exchange of knowledge and active involvement in the processes taking place in our environment.
