Apply to Design and Build with Cane, in Parc Natural de la Serra de Collserola, Barcelona, Spain

NEW DATES!

Course postponed to March 4th to 31st 2018 due to bureaucratic issues.

Design and Build with Cane is a 4 week building workshop. During the workshop we will build a cane building for a training center in natural building.

Where: Valldaura – Self Sufficient Labs is a project promoted by IaaC (Institute for Advanced
Architecture of Catalonia) for the creation of a self-sufficient habitat research centre.
Located in the Collserola Natural Park, in the heart of the metropolitan area of Barcelona, it has laboratories for the production of energy, food and things, and develops projects and academic programmes in association with leading research centres around the world.

Giant reed (Arundo donax) is an invasive plant which, although adapted to our culture, brings many environmental disorders: it has a high consumption of water and does not provide habitat and food for wildlife. Therefore, the removal and use given to this plant is important in the control of the species and its proliferation.

CanyaViva proposes to use the cane as a resource for construction, proposing an innovative, low cost technique for construction, gathering reeds in bundles so that it can be used structurally and not just for covering and paneling.

This workshop aims to introduce this technique to encourage the use of this material and provide tools to self-manage simple structures, while showing the enormous potential of this material.
