Natural materials age with dignity
It is great to see the structures after 2-4 years, how they aged and how the materials received their natural patina, the colors have shifted and the structure has its own unique character. We are currently doing a follow-up on our experimental buildings from Bi0n I, revisiting the structure and evaluating the work from the technical-, social- and learning approach.
Wondering how they all turned out? We are working on it, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, have a look at the projects from Bi0n I
The forth week, has been dedicated to close the opening with old windows that were ready to be demolished. We decided to recycle more than 60 square meters of windows to give the good transparency to the building and we worked on the visual connection through the inside and the outside.
Second and last week of our ”design&build rammed earth workshop” have passed. During the week end we had the opportunity to know better the environment of the village with two excursions: first we were invited to a traditional walk in the country-side with Valverde’s inhabitants. During this pagan feast, they usually do a procession with horses, tractors and other vehicles, and make several breaks to have some wine and tapas. It was a great experience although we had to come back quickly to the village because of the rain..
The last week of the course has arrived. We worked really hard to finish the structure. This week was the time of the secondary nerves that are a bit more sensible than the other elements. We remade all the knots that until now were provisional and that now are definitive.
The last week of the workshop, and plenty of things were completed. We started and finished laying the cordwood floors, using the cut up oak. All the walls were completed, all with its own pattern. The eastern wall made up by the windows placed as a V, and walls filled by chopped birch wood and debarked oak logs. Above the windows we made the wall fillings by recycled wood
On July 28th 2017 the BIØN-team leaded by AK0 with the help of the local partner association Sabinarti delivered the outcome of LearnBIØN workshop#2 to the local community of Casaprota, the small town in central Italy that has hosted the workshop.
The last week of the course has arrived. With it comes a central part of the learning process, learning the secrets behind building a vault. To help us sharing this knowledge we received the architect Miguel Rocha from CEDAC Terra that counts with numerous experiences with arches and vaults in Portugal and Spain.
