#4 DESIGN AND BUILD WITH GIANT REED
Building with natural and locally available materials is presented as an alternative to mainstream construction materials such as cement , steel and brick. It requires much less energy in their production, has greater respect for the environment and the people involved in the process of developing them, and allows a greater degree of self‐sufficiency, using materials readily at hand and simple techniques.
Giant reed (Arundo donax) is an invasive plant which, although adapted to our culture, brings many environmental disorders: it has a high consumption of water and does not provide habitat and food for wildlife. Therefore, the removal and use given to this plant is important in the control of the species and its proliferation.
CanyaViva proposes to use the cane as a resource for construction, proposing an innovative, low cost technique for construction, gathering reeds in bundles so that it can be used structurally and not just for covering and panelling.
This workshop aims to introduce this technique to encourage the use of this material and provide tools to self-manage simple structures, while showing the enormous potential of this material.
